I always argue with people on what is the best engine for a Cylinder Mower and everyone is defending their own choice. It will be unfair if I’m just gonna stretch out and talk a lot about my engine of choice so I lay down the Top 3 engine brands that the majority preferred.
Top 3 Engine Brands for a Cylinder Mower
1.Briggs and Stratton
Briggs and Stratton are one of the Engines of choice if you want an inexpensive but reliable engine. You can get a 3.5HP petrol engine for $325 up to 13.5HP for $1,130, This brand has a huge list of engine models to choose from depending on your budget.
What makes Briggs and Stratton Good
Briggs and Stratton is a 4 stroke engine which means no mixing of oil to fuel which means no mess.
This Engine is an OHV or Overhead Valve design which is a common valve train design and cheap to maintain.
Lawnmower manufacturers have been using Briggs and Stratton for many years and its performance has been proven and tested by the customers of these Brands. Scott Bonnar and Mowmaster are some of the brands that use the Briggs and Stratton engine.
Briggs and Stratton’s engines receive tons of positive reviews and 5-star ratings on Amazon, eBay and other online retailers.
2. Robin or Subaru
Robin engine is the first engine that I have and the first that I worked and this engine is freaking tough.
Based on my research Robin is a brand name which is owned by Subaru Corporation a company that also manufactured small engines until they been acquired by Yamaha Motor Corp. on the 13th of December 2016.
A 2.8HP will cost you $799 for up to $1,780 for a 14.0HP engine. It’s a bit pricy but it’s still one of the best small engines out there.
Robin engines are also 4 stroke engine on an Aluminum block, This engine also has an OHV design which means it has push rod’s to make the valves work.
When it comes to choosing the best engine for a Cylinder mower nothing beats the Honda engine. For 15 years this is still my engine of choice when it comes to Lawnmower and even small industrial equipment.
A Honda engine is the Toughest of all the small engines out there, It has very less vibration, Run’s very smooth and very easy to maintain.
A genuine Honda engine will cost you around $565 for 3.5HP GX120 up to $1,065 for a 13.0HP GX390. The models GX120 up to GX390 are the engines mostly used in Cylinder mowers and GCV160 to GXV390 are ones used in Rotary lawnmowers.
The best feature on Honda engines especially the GX series is the Oil alert system which is an Engine protection system.
How Honda Oil Alert System Works
The Oil alert system on small Honda engines works by using engine oil pressure.
When you start cranking the engine the oil in the crankcase start to build up pressure which causes the pressure switch to turn ON creating a Close Ignition system, Which in turn gives a spark to the engine at an exact timing.
When the engine has an oil leak and the level becomes dangerously low it will not be enough to create oil pressure so the pressure switch will cut Off creating an Open ignition circuit which in turn stop the engine from running.
There are other Engine brands out there that you can choose but these 3 are so far the ones that stand the test of time. The only thing you need to remember is to avoid buying imitation brands or substandard parts, It might solve your problem but in the long run, it will only cost you more time and money.
